Wow! This week, at HKC Long Island we began our HKC/Kehilla Vocation Experience for Summer 2015. This collaborative program, in its third year, is for campers with special needs, providing them with different vocational experiences and opportunities. This structured program mirrors that of a maintenance work environment on the campgrounds. These campers become HKC workers with close attention to safety and supervision, learning and working! This vocational training helps campers learn what it is like to sign in and out of work, gather directions and then complete a task.
As the returning Long Island Liaison for Camp Kehilla, this is my second year with this wonderful program. Of the twenty campers who have helped to make HKC so beautiful, with our vocational jobs, more than half were returning members! It was such a pleasure to see so many familiar faces and the excitement that was attached to each and every smile!
After our introductions, we jumped right into our work Monday morning! We painted new picnic tables, washed windows, used our garbage grippers to clean the grounds and watered our beautiful flowers that are near our Administration Office. We always try to remember that it takes working together to complete each task.
Just like in prior years, our message continues to be TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More. And this week our group members demonstrated that perfectly, working together as a TEAM!
We cannot wait to see how this summer goes and as these campers continue to hone their skills and gain more experience! Here are some pictures from our projects last year!
This program was made possible in 2015 through a grant by the Sterling National Bank Charitable Foundation.
