A Community of Mitzvah Doers

What happens when you ask all the camps in the HKC camp community to participate in a mitzvah project together? You get enthusiastic responses and an imaginative range ways to execute the project.

This summer, the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds invited the camps to participate in an Act of Kindness project at camp where the campers assemble personal care kits that will ultimately be distributed through UJA-Federation’s Supplies for Success initiative.

After securing a donation of 4000 toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss from Henry Schein Inc., as well as 4000 combs, volunteers congregated at the Alan & Kathy Greenberg Sports Pavilion at HKC Long Island to divvy up and pack the donated objects to be distributed to the camps.

In addition to the donated item, the camps were invited to collect additional personal hygiene items from their camper families and JCC communities.  Many of the camps answered this call to action, collecting hand sanitizers and travel size bars of soap, shampoo, and more. The Suffolk Y Camps actually made this an activity during color war!

Each camp integrated the assembly of the kits into its program in its own way. At the 92Y Camps, it was a booth at an activity fair on Israel Day. For each activity, campers received a stamp in their passports. For the Mid-Island Y JCC camp, it was part of their Mitzvah Day. At Camp Yomawha the C.I.T.s oversaw the project and at the Staten Island JCC it was a scheduled activity for all their groups.

By the second week of August all the camps will have completed the project.  The 4000 kits will be collected and handed over to the UJA-Federation’s Supplies for Success initiative to be included in the backpacks filled with school supplies that are distributed to disadvantaged children for the coming school year.
